Directed by David Casademunt, The Wasteland is a Spanish horror film made by Netflix is distributed. Inma Cuesta starred, while Mar Targarona, Asier Flores and Marina Padro starred in the supporting roles. The film was released for worldwide release on Netflix in January 2022.
The horror element of The Wasteland comes from the human subconscious and the feeling of restlessness. The atmosphere is in a diabolical state in which one expects bad things to happen. The director and producers did an excellent job creating a creepy atmosphere and playing with the human mind to create a spectacular event. Let’s explain and discuss the ending of The Wasteland.
The Wasteland Plot
The family of three, consisting of husband Salvador, wife Lucia and son Diego, lives in a remote desert in a small house. The rules in their house are pretty strict and Salvador is often strict with his son when there are many boundaries at stake. Diego is a curious child and has a lot of questions.
Whenever Diego tries to ask Salvador why he’s not allowed to cross the border, he starts telling creepy stories about a monster that lurks across the border. Sometimes Lucia becomes skeptical about the way her husband is conveying things to the child. She believes that doing so may cause emotional harm to the child by making things too real.
One day a floating body knocks on the body of water near her home. The body is unconscious but alive and has some wounds. Salvador takes the man into his house to treat his wounds. Later, when the man wakes up, he says that he no longer has the will to live and shoots himself. Salvador believes that it is his job to inform the family of this person’s death. He leaves the house for a few days to go to the man’s family, leaving his son and wife alone in the wasteland.

Who was the beast?
It’s been a few days since Salvador left the house and didn’t come back. This affects Lucia’s mind. At first she didn’t believe in the stories of Salvador. But with each day that passed, her fear grew and she became more and more restless. In the meantime, Diego has noticed everything and knows what is going on with her mother.
Diego knew her mother was scared because her husband hadn’t returned in days. She even started firing bullets at the beast her subconscious had created. For Diego, this beast didn’t exist because it wasn’t real at all. It was created by fear and anxiety in her mother’s mind.
The film takes a slow turn in the development of fantasy into reality for the mother and son couple. Diego also lets himself into the situation, falls victim to his subconscious and begins to see the beast. This is remarkable for his age, because he was still a child. At this age, the mind tends to believe in incredible things so it couldn’t really do anything about it.
The End of The Wasteland Explained – Did Lucia Die?
The theme of the film revolves around what the human mind is capable of when faced with certain circumstances. It stays that way throughout the film, because with each passing day, the mental state of mother and child is getting worse. First it is the mother who gives in to the feeling of restlessness, and then the child follows it.
It later turns out that Salvador’s sister also saw this monster and committed suicide. However, the real reason for her suicide was the abuse she experienced from her parents. Diego prophesies the same fate for his mother, whose mental state continues to deteriorate. As a small child, all he can do is watch his mother wait for her deathbed.
In the last scene we see Diego putting his mother’s dead body in the body of water. The imaginary beast he made up stands next to him and he sees the same scars on his hands as her father. Who knows, maybe Salvador saw the beast because his parents mistreated him too. But since he was strong, he didn’t drive suicide and always told his son to be strong.
